WHAT BUDS SHALL BLOOM
WHAT BLOOMS SHALL BLOSSOM
Bloom was my exploration of reinventing what a traditional boot could be.
Inspired by the natural beauty of flowers and their progression from bud to full bloom, the design translates that transformative process into a functional, wearable form.

PATTERN DRAFTING
_edited.png)

When designing the pattern, I focused on minimizing unnecessary lines so that every detail served a clear purpose.
Side zippers were integrated around the ankle to allow the wearer to easily slide their foot in, with pattern lines flowing from the zipper down to the toe to create a distinct sense of character.
The rear of the shoe flares outward to allow pants to rest naturally on top, reduce drag while walking, and provide additional volume at the upper to comfortably accommodate the calf.
DEVELOPMENT

Hides were carefully selected before each pattern piece was individually cut, precisely marked with sewing lines, and treated with adhesive to secure components in place prior to moving into the sewing and construction phase.
LINING

Material - Closed Cell Neoprene
This material aligned naturally with the concept due to its tear resistance and ability to provide cushioning and protection around the foot. Beyond its functional advantages, closed-cell neoprene contributes to the design language itself, introducing a material not traditionally associated with boots and reinforcing the project’s intention to challenge conventional footwear construction.
UPPER

Material - Shrunken Calfskin
This particular calfskin was selected for its natural inconsistency, which emphasizes the raw, organic qualities of the material and allows it to age gracefully over time, developing character through wear. Its inherent water resistance and supple hand feel ensure immediate comfort straight out of the box, eliminating the need for an extended break-in period while reinforcing the shoe’s emphasis on durability and lived-in beauty.

Designed for ease and immediate comfort, Bloom reimagines the act of putting on a boot. A water resistant calfskin upper is paired with a closed cell neoprene lining, allowing the boot to be worn straight out of the box while maintaining structure, protection, and softness.
Three functional zippers allow the boot to be worn in multiple configurations, drastically shifting the silhouette to match the wearer’s aesthetic. Ventilation perforations along the medial side provide subtle breathability, while stitch and turn detailing flows from the side zippers to the toe, defining IRDREA’s form language.
